North Carolina Assisted Living Manager Training Program
Program Overview
The steps to becoming a certified North Carolina Adult Care Home Administrator in the UNC-CH program are:

(These steps can be completed in any order or sequence, but it is best to first get a preceptor, then to enroll in the AIT program / correspondence course.)

Step 1. Obtain from and submit to Division of Facility Services (DFS) an application packet including
  • College diploma or other satisfactory education
  • Release of information form
  • Finger print cards
  • DFS application form
  • Money order for application

Completing this step establishes that you are qualified to become an assisted living administrator

Step 2. Find a North Carolina certified preceptor.
Once you have found your preceptor, enroll online in the correspondence course. The cost is $590
Step 3. Complete 15 assignments in the correspondence course: LTCE 120 and
Under your DFS approved preceptor, complete in-facility activities in the 7+ assigned areas and send your written answers to Long Term Care Education in Chapel Hill in at least the 7 areas: management, human resources, resident care, personal services / activities, dietary, environment, housekeeping and maintenance. Normally this will take two to three days of your time and 2 to 3 hours of your preceptor's time.

A certificate will be sent to you upon completion which you can submit to the NC Division of Facilities Services.

Note: You must also pass the DFS examination on the North Carolina rules governing assisted living facilities. This exam can be taken and passed at any point in the process of becoming a certified assisted living administrator and is offered around the state. Contact DFS for dates.
